[24]
The interment book for the Three Springs General Cemetery
incorrectly lists his name as Arthur J. GALLARD [24]
From The Irwin Index newspaper, Saturday 1
February 1930:
"A farm worker named William Arnold Gillard, aged 19 years,
employed by Mr Liebe, Waddy Waddy, met with his death under tragic
circumstances on Wednesday. It appears from inquiries made by
Constable Street, of Three Springs, that the young man was handling
a tin of kerosene, and was smoking at the time, when an explosion
occurred. He was immediately enveloped in flames and all his
clothing was burned off him. Assistance was promptly rendered, and
the unfortunate man, who had received terrible injuries, was hurried
to the Three Springs Hospital. He was met at Carnamah by Dr.
Mayrhofer and Matron Coffey, who rendered immediate attention, and
on arrival at Three Springs everything was done for him. No hope
was, however, entertained from the first, owing to his extensive and
serious injuries. He remained conscious practically to the last, but
died a few hours after admission to the hospital. Two Italians, who
were working about half a mile away, told Constable Street that they
heard a sudden report, and immediately after saw a dense column of
black smoke. When this had cleared away they saw Gillard fall to the
ground with his arms outstretched. A subsequent examination at the
spot of the tin of kerosene showed there was a small nail hole in
it, through which it is supposed gas, generated by the heat of the
sun, had escaped, and, coming into contact with Gillard's cigarette
- it is supposed he was smoking a cigarette - had become ignited,
causing the explosion. An inquest was afterwards held at Three
Springs, at which a verdict of accidental death was returned. The
funeral took place in the Three Springs cemetery. Deceased had only
been in Western Australia about two months. He is understood to have
a brother living in Devonshire, but so far as can be ascertained, he
had no relatives in the State."

From The North Midland Times newspaper,
Thursday 11 January 1951:
"Obituary - The Late Mr. G. N. Greenwood. It is with regret that
we have to record the sudden death on Monday, December 18 of Mr.
Geo. N. Greenwood at his residence, "Maryland," Waddy Forest.
Although the deceased gentleman had not enjoyed the best of health
over the past few years his sprightly manner disguised his illness
to a large extent, so that his passing was unexpected and came as a
great shock to his family and large circle of friends. The late Mr.
Greenwood was born in England in 1879 and came to West Australia in
1901. Commenced farming operations in Northam and remained there
until 1922 when he transferred his family and farming interests to
the newly opened settlement of Waddy Forest. From this time until
his death Mr. Greenwood was conspicuous of his many activities in
the district. All his life he was a keen sportsman playing cricket,
football, tennis and golf. Not content with playing sport he took a
lively interest in the administrative side at various times, being
president of the Coorow Football Club and Coorow Golf Club. He was
also a foundation member of the Waddy Forest Tennis Club. As well as
sporting activities the late Mr. Greenwood was a public spirited
citizen who showed a great interest in all district activities. It
was mainly owing to his representations that a school was opened at
Waddy Forest and for some time he occupied the position of president
of the P. and C. organisations. Besides being a committee man of the
Coorow-Waddy Forest Agricultural Society for many years he was also
President of the organisation in 1938. As secretary of the P.P.A.
for some years he worked hard for the betterment of farming
conditions and he was always ready to assist later settlers with
information and advice on local conditions. Despite his arduous
pioneering labours and the time given to district activity he raised
a large family and to his wife and children we extend our heartfelt
sympathy in their very great loss. His kindly disposition and happy
nature endeared him to all he came in contact with and made him a
very welcome member of any group. His passing leaves a gap in the
memory of his many friends which cannot adequately be filled. The
funeral took place in the Catholic portion of the Three Springs
Cemetery with the Rev. Father B. Gallagher officiating at the
graveside. A large gathering of relatives and friends attended and a
profusion of floral tributes was laid on the grave."

"Obituary - Late Mr. Guy Greenwood. The death occurred suddenly
at his home in Waddy Forest on Sunday November 15, of Michael Guy
Greenwood, a highly respected resident of the Waddy Forest and
Coorow districts. The late Mr. Greenwood had not enjoyed the best of
health, but his death came as a great shock to his relatives and
friends. The late Mr. Greenwood, who had a quiet but kindly
disposition was one of the earliest settlers in the Waddy Forest
district. He came to the district with his brother in 1922 and took
up farming at his late residence "Manell Farm," Waddy Forest.
Previous to that they both came from England in 1902 and took up
farming in the Northam district, which they carried on before coming
to Waddy Forest. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow, one
daughter, two brothers and three sisters, who are the chief

Winchester cemetery on Monday, November 16, and was one of the

From The Western Mail newspaper, Thursday 25
April 1935:
Moora - A Progress Centre - Moora Personalities
"The Rev. F. W. Gunning is one of the most well-known personalities
along the Midland [Railway] Line. He has probably travelled through
the districts adjacent to Moora, more than any other individual.
Coming to Moora in 1909 his parish extended 10,000 square miles.
With horse and sulky he averaged 5,000 miles a year. During the past
six years his car has travelled 78,000 miles. He knows every old
pioneer of the district and has the history of scores of individuals
on the tip of his fingers and ready for transmission to the
typewriter at any moment. In his study at the Rectory there are
photographs of many old-timers, and records of the district's life.
Throughout his long association with the district Mr. Gunning has
endeared himself to all sections of the community and he has done
much to further the interests of the Moora township by giving his
services to any movement for the betterment of conditions. He is
enthusiastic in his experiences of the Oxford Group Movement."
From The North Midland Times newspaper,
Friday 19 July 1935:
"Rev. F. W. Gunning Leaves Moora - 26 Years Residence - The
affection and respect of the Moora and Midland residents for the
Rev. F. W. Gunning was emphasised on Friday, June 28, when 400
people met in the Moora Town Hall to bid farewell to Rev. and Mrs.
Gunning. During the past few weeks the Rev. Gunning has been
farewelled at every centre in the Midlands, but it is doubtful if
there has been such a representative gathering as on the occasion of
the evening at Moora. Extensive preparations were made for the
evening and they were fully justified as the gathering indicates. A
number of citizens spoke of the loss that would be sustained by Mr.
Gunning's departure amongst whom were the Chairman of the Moora Road
Board (Mr. E. H. B. Lefroy), Rev. Father Isidore (Roman Catholic
Church), Rev. Limb (Methodist Church), Messrs. A. B. Gloster, H. D.
Broad, A. McKinley and H. Carr, all of whom made sincere and
eulogistic remarks concerning the sterling qualities of the guest as
a resident and a Man of God. The Rev. Mr. Gunning leaves Moora to
take over the work of the Mt. Hawthorn parish."
