From The Irwin Index newspaper, Saturday 11 February
1939:
Late Dr Hungerford - Long Association with Geraldton - Former Resident
Medical Officer
"It was with very great regret that residents of Geraldton and the district
heard of the death of Dr L. M .T. Hungerford, which occurred on Thursday of last
week at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco. Dr Hungerford, who was 74 years of
age, had been in failing health for some time past, and his death occurred after
a long illness. He was a native of Cork, Ireland, and after taking his medical
degree at Dublin, he came out to Western Australia. For two years he was
district medical officer at Dongara, and was then transferred to Busselton,
where, in addition to being resident medical officer, he was also the resident
magistrate. In 1898 he was appointed district medical officer at Perth and also
acted as medical officer for the municipality. The following year he resigned
those positions to become district medical officer and quarantine officer at
Geraldton. He had the sole control of the Victoria District Hospital under the
old regime, and his association with Geraldton continued for many years. He was
held in the highest esteem, and was well liked. He took a great interest in the
affairs of the district and in 1912 he was elected unopposed as Mayor, but
resigned the position in the following July. At one time he was interested in a
farming property in the Upper Chapman district where he had a citrus orchard.
When he severed his connection with Geraldton several years ago he was for a
time resident in the North Midlands and in the Moora districts. Later he held
the position of resident medical officer at Esperance, but retired about a year
ago. The funeral took place in the Church of England Cemetery at Karrakatta on
Friday afternoon of last week."

A motion was put forward at the meeting, and carried, that
two surveyed bores be established to relieve the water shortage [5]
The bore put down in the Womarden Ward eight miles from
Three Springs was a failure, delivering only salty water [5: 28-Feb-1936]
Due to the acute situation with water, and as the contractor
and his plant were on site, he had a second bore put down [5]
At the next meeting of the Three Springs Road Board he asked
the members to confirm his action in having this done [5]
Two members endorsed his actions, one saying he "had used
his best discretion and had worked in the interests of the Board" [5]
Three members of the Board, and one in particular, were not
so understanding and the motion endorsing his action was lost [5]
It was common practise for Road Board members to have works
done, and then afterwards have their actions endorsed [5]
He claimed the Board had no faith in himself as their
Chairman, and tendered his resignation [5: 28-Feb-1936]
Following his resignation 22 ratepayers requested a special meeting of the TS
Road Board, which was held on 10 March 1936 [5]
Prior to the meeting he had obtained advice from the Road
Board Association's solicitors re his actions with the bores [5:
13-Mar-1936]
The solicitors stated that he had "acted according to the
Road Districts Act 1919-33 and in the best interests of the Board"
[5]
The ratepayers at the meeting supported him unanimously and
found fault with the Members of the Board who had opposed him [5]
After much discussion a motion was put forward by a local
farmer that all Members of the Board should resign immediately [5]
He agreed with this motion, and that the ratepayers could
then elect a new Board, or any of the old Members as they saw fit [5]
Himself, Albert I. BROAD and Henry C. STACEY resigned,
however the other members showed no signs of cooperation [5]
As three of the Board's Members had resigned, there was
insufficient Members and the Board was automatically defunct [5]
At the end of the meeting a vote of thanks, which was
"carried with acclamation" was bestowed on him for chairing the meeting [5]
After the Road Board became defunct a Government Commissioner was sent to run
things until a new Board was elected [5: 10-Apr-1936]

From The Western Mail newspaper, Thursday 27 December
1928:
Country Towns and Districts - Three Springs - A Fertile Wheat District
"Fairfield, the property of Mr. W. Padbury, is a well equipped farm of 8,423
acres of good land to the east of the town. It is managed by Mr. E. Hunt. The
crops are practically all wheat, the total being 2,600 acres. The 6,200 acres
cleared include 1,350 done last year and now under crop. There is an additional
area now fallowed. Next year the crops will cover 3,000 acres, including 300
acres of new land. Due to 500 acres of Federation wheat having been affected
with rust, the last harvest yielded only six bags to the acre, but the return
this year promises to reach seven bags. The misfortunate with Federation has
induced Mr. Hunt to confine himself this season to Nabawa, Merredin and premium
wheats. One paddock of Merredin is giving nine bags. Another patch of 67 acres
under Carrabin, a premium wheat, is producing between eight and nine bags. An
interesting unit in the [farm's] plant is an auto-header, which gives very
satisfactory results. Though the farm does not carry a stud, it supports a fine
collection of stock, comprising 2,000 sheep and 60 head of cattle."
From The Western Mail newspaper, Thursday 26 December
1929:
Country Towns and Districts - Three Springs and Mingenew - Cereal and
Pastoral Wealth - People and Properties
"The chairman of the Three Springs Road Board is Mr. E. Hunt, who is
indefatigable in his efforts to promote the interests of the township and
district. He is chairman of the football and cricket clubs, and an enthusiastic
supporter of other public bodies. Mr. W. Padbury's well-known property,
Fairfield, which consists of 8,500 acres, is managed by Mr. Hunt, who has had
extensive agricultural experience in England. He arrived in Western Australia in
1912, and in 1919 he took control of Mr. Padbury's Rose Hill Friealan Stud, at
Guildford, until 1922, when he went to Wannamal to engage in share farming with
Mr. Padbury. While there he also managed the Ayrshire Stud. Mr. Hunt came to
Three Springs in 1923. This year 2,800 acres were cropped on Fairfield, and a
five bag average is expected. Next year 3,120 acres will be seeded. In 1926 an
auto-header was purchased, and it has given satisfactory results, harvesting up
to 40 acres daily. Mr. Hunt is very popular throughout the district, and his
many public services are deeply appreciated. He is the most unassuming of men."
From The Western Mail newspaper, Thursday 5 October
1933:
Country Towns and Districts - Three Springs and Carnamah - Rich Pastoral and
Wheat Lands - A Progressive Community
"Mr Edward Hunt, the popular chairman of the Three Springs district road board
since its inception in 1929, when it was alienated from the Carnamah and
Mingenew road board districts, is a native of Lancashire, where he was born in
1878. As a lad on his father's farm he acquired considerable knowledge of the
industry, particularly in that section relating to stud stock, so that when he
decided to migrate to Western Australia, he was comparatively well equipped with
the knowledge essential to success on the land. Arriving in W.A. in 1911, he set
out to gain local farming experience in various agricultural districts until
1918, when he engaged with Mr William Padbury as stud master at Rosehill stud
farm, Guildford. Since then, Mr Hunt has been actively engaged in the
preparation of stud stock horses, cattle and sheep on behalf of Mr William
Padbury, and has had outstanding success at the Perth, Melbourne and Sydney
Royal Shows. At present, Mr Hunt is manager of Mr William Padbury's Fairfield
property of 8,500 acres at Three Springs. In addition to his road board
activities, Mr Hunt takes a very keen interest in the sport of the district, and
holds executive positions with many of the clubs in the district. He is also a
past president of the Three Springs Agricultural Show."
