From The Irwin Index newspaper, Friday 26
April 1963:
Old Resident Of District Is Deceased
"The late Mr. Norman Saggers, who died at the North Midlands
District Hospital at Three Springs last Saturday, was one of the
oldest and most respected residents of the Mingenew region. He was
88 years of age and had suffered ill-health for a long period.
He was born at Jamieson in Victoria, where his father was a
school teacher. That town is one of the most beautiful mountain
resorts in that State, with trout streams and rivers set in dense
forest of giant gums and tree ferns. One of a family of 14, Mr.
Saggers and an elder brother came to Western Australia in 1894, when
he was 19. He lived in this State from then on. During that period
of 69 years, he resided in Cue, Yalgoo, Katanning and Tambellup
before coming to the North Midlands. He spent a number of years in
Three Springs and then moved to Mingenew, where he lived for 41
years, being one of the oldest residents of that district.
One of his main interests was working sheep dogs. Mr.
Saggers was an honorary life member of the W.A. Working Sheep Dogs
Association and had worked dogs in the first field trials conducted
by that organisation. He won the Sandover Cup at one of those early
trials. He also was a successful breeder and skilful trainer. His
dogs were eagerly sought throughout that State, some being purchased
by station owners far to the north and from others as far south as
Red Lake and Esperance. Mr. Saggers was a member of the Royal
Agricultural Society of Western Australia for many years as well as
the Mingenew Agricultural Society. He was patron of the Mingenew
Bowling Club.
He is mourned by his widow, eight children and six
step-children, 33 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. His
children and stepchildren are:- Nita (Mrs. H. E. Thomas), Bill (Mr.
N. W. Saggers, of Applecross), Arn (Mr. A. E. Saggers, Victoria
Park), Myrtle (Mrs. R. Nettle, Kojonup), Vera (Mrs. H. Randall,
Perth), Joe (Mr. J. Saggers, Victoria Park), Edie (Mrs. W.
Gilbertson, Maylands), Gerald (Mr. G. H. Pearce, Brookton), Doreen
(Mrs. R. Desmond, Tuart Hill), Linda (Mrs. H. J. Ralston,
Claremont), Beryl (Mrs. D. Calaghan, Wembley), Shirley (Mrs. L.
Looke, Mingenew) and Don (Mr. D. H. Pearce, Mt. Pleasant).
The funeral was at the Mingenew Cemetery last Monday
afternoon and was attended by a large representation from throughout
the district who gathered to pay their last tributes. The service at
the graveside was conducted by the president of the Seventh-Day
Adventist Perth Conference, Pastor F. Maberley. During the ceremony,
Mr. H. J. Ralston and his elder daughter, Miss Janette Ralston, sang
"Beyond the Sunset." The pallbearers were old friends and
associates:- Messrs. B. Thomas, R. R. Colegate, P. F. Lynch, J.
Connolly, F. Wick and E. C. Newton. The casket was carried by
Messrs. M. J. Payne, L. Croft, L. Baugh and A. Wick. The many floral

Springs for 18 months [152]
Member of the Kadathinni Farmers & Progress Association in
Three Springs in 1911 [9: 13-Jan-1911]
Took up 920 acres of prospective farmland in Morawa for 12/6
per acre [152]
Farmer in Morawa 1911-1933 [19]
About 400 acres of his 920 acre holding was forest and the
remainder was scrub [152]
His postal address was Three Springs in 1911 and 1912, and
he gave his physical address as Morawa via Arrino [6] [19]
By 1916 he had fenced his property, divided it into
paddocks, had cleared 300 acres and had 260 acres of crop [152]
His crops averaged 13 bushels in 1913 and 1915, and in 1916
he expected them to average about 14 bushels [152]
The crops were sown with 45 pounds of seed to the acre with
45 pounds of super on his heavy land up to 80 on his light land
[152]
His water supply in 1916 consisted of a dry well and a dam
that only lasted during the winter months [152]
Owing to a lack of water on his farm he had to cart water
from a Government well over summer [152]
In 1916 he was living in a iron hessian camp on his farm and
had a bush stable but no machinery shed [152]
Began with £350 capital and borrowed an additional £480 from
the Agricultural Bank [152]

Massey-Harris harvester which he used with five horses [152]
With his five horses he could plough 10 acres a day, seed 10

He had poultry and a few pigs for his own use [152]
Gave evidence to the Royal Commission on the Agricultural Industries
of Western Australia in Morawa on 27 November 1916 [152]
He believed farmers in Morawa needed 600 acres of first
class land in addition to 1,000 acres of sandplain [152]
The wages for farmhands in Morawa at the time was £2 and
keep per week, and he'd had good workers for that price [152]
He reported that in Morawa farmers generally worked well
together and that cooperation between farmers was advantageous
[152]
He'd paid £120 in rent, which he believed would have
profited him and the State more if he could have spent it on the
farm [152]
He suggested that instead there should be no rent for the
first five years, and that rent spread over the remainder years
[152]
Once he'd found water he hoped to get sheep and although
there were dingoes he didn't expect too much trouble from them
[152]
There was no kite leaf poison in Morawa however suspected
poison had been found after the 1914 drought and thunderstorms
[152]
He felt that the Agricultural bank and the Industries
Assistance Board (I.A.B.) had treated him generously [152]

"A Sudden Death. A man by the name of Scoberg, aged about 70,
who had been engaged in a clearing contract at Carnamah, paid a
visit to Three Springs on the 15th. inst for the purpose of visiting
the doctor as he had not been feeling too well. After examination by
Dr. MacAleer, he was prescribed for and advised to stay in Three
Springs for a few days so that he could avail himself of medical
attention. The following morning, at 7 30, he was discovered by Mrs
Cook, in an apparently unconscious condition leaning against and
clutching a wire fence. The police and Doctor were quickly summoned
but on their arrival life was pronounced to be extinct. After
further examination by the Doctor a burial certificate was given it
