Tully, who was farming in the Carnamah district for many years, is an inmate of
a Perth hospital and is not expected to recover."
From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 12
December 1941:
"Obituary - Late Mr. John Martin Tully. The flying of the flag at half-mast
in Carnamah on Sunday last heralded the news that Mr. John Martin Tully, an old
and highly respected resident of the Carnamah district, had passed over the
Great Divide. The news of the deceased gentleman's death did not come altogether
as a shock, as he had been ailing for some time. The late Mr. Tully was a native
of New South Wales and during his younger days he followed the calling of a
miner. He saw active service during the Great War of 1914-18, and served with
the 28th Battalion. He first came to this district about 1921 or 1922, when he
selected land at Prowaka under the Soldier Settlers Scheme, and during the
intervening years he earned the esteem and respect with of all with whom he came
in contact. Advancing years and failing health compelled him to give up farm
life about two years ago, and since then he has been residing at the Shaftsbury
Hotel in Perth. The deceased gentleman was a bachelor, but leaves two elderly
sisters to mourn their loss. One of the Miss Tullys is well-known in the
Carnamah district as she kept house for her deceased brother for many years."

From The Irwin Index newspaper, Saturday 1 October 1955:
"Obituary - Mrs. Ada Rose Haig - Old District Identity. After a somewhat
protracted period of failing health and at the ripe old age of eighty-three
years, death claimed yet another old identity of the North Midlands in the
person of Mrs. Ada Rose Haig in the North Midlands District Hospital at Three
Springs on Sunday morning last. The deceased lady, who was born at Moralana
Station (South Australia) in 1872, first came to this State [over] fifty years
ago and for some time resided in Kalgoorlie and Boulder. Shortly afterwards she
was married to Mr. John Maurice Haig, who at the time was managing a mine of the
goldfields and with whom she returned in 1908 to South Australia to follow
farming and pastoral pursuits on a station property at Quorn. They had resided
on the goldfields for a period of ten years and left the State with a small
family. After having spent eight years at Quorn they disposed of their property
and then for a further period of eight years resided at Mt. Barker and Adelaide.
In 1926 they again came to Western Australia with a family of four sons and
three daughters and acquired a property at Winchester. Therefore, for [almost]
the past thirty years the late Mrs. Haig has resided in the North Midlands, her
husband having predeceased her at Carnamah about nine years ago. The late Mrs.
Haig, who was a lady with a very lovable nature and likeable disposition, made
many firm friends during her lengthy residence in the North Midlands, perhaps
more particularly from around Winchester and Carnamah, having spent the
declining few years of her life at the homes of her two daughters at the latter
centre, and it was only about three weeks ago that she was compelled to enter
hospital. During that period, however, despite her remarkable fortitude, her
strength gradually weakened until she lapsed into unconsciousness and passed
peacefully away on Sunday last. For many years the deceased lady had been a very
active member of the Carnamah Branch of the Country Women's Association, and
until a few years ago she was also evinced quite a lively interest in the public
affairs of the district. The deceased lady is survived by all members of her
family of four sons and three daughters, these being Messrs. Clyde Haig
(Winchester), Edward Haig (Carnamah), Keith Haig (Adelaide), Hugh Haig
(Queensland) and Mesdames A. C. Bierman (Carnamah), H. Pope (Carnamah) and P.
Little (Melbourne), who have families comprising sixteen children and five great
grandchildren. In the presence of relatives and friends the funeral took place
in the Anglican Cemetery at Winchester on Tuesday last with the Rev. F. C.
Armstrong officiating at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. B.
Raffan, L. W. Grierson, E. K. Wells and A. R. C. Forrester, and the casket was
borne from the hearse to the graveside by Messrs. C. J. T. Martyn, C. Chapman,
W. A. Turner and R. A. F. Solling."

From the Fatal Accident Report of Lawlers Gold Mine:
"Mr Graeme James Turner, the driver of a water truck, employed by Leighton
Contractors at the Plutonic Resources Ltd Lawlers Gold Mine, suffered fatal
injuries in an accident at the mine at about 10.00 hours on Saturday, 13
September 1997. Mr Turner was driving a water truck (Ford Louisville on-road
type) taking a quantity of water down the access ramp at the New Holland Pit to
water a shot when he made a "Mayday" call on the radio. The vehicle went out of
control and gained speed. After travelling approximately 600 metres along the
straight section of ramp at high speed the watercart failed to negotiate a bend
on the ramp. The watercart went over onto its left hand side, hit the pit wall,
slid along the wall and was slowed in its forward direction by a large
protruding area in the pit wall. This collision caused the back end of the
watercart to come around in an anticlockwise direction away from the pit wall.
The vehicle came to rest at a right angle across the pit ramp still on its left
hand side. The engine and cabin of the watercart sustained the full force of the
impact. The accident was observed by a truck driver and the Leighton's pit
foreman who raised the alarm immediately. Despite the efforts of rescuers and
paramedics the casualty was not able to be freed from the vehicle and was
pronounced dead at 11:38 hours. The deceased was released from the watercart by
the Leinster fire brigade at 13:40 hours and taken to the Leinster Mortuary by
the Plutonic ambulance."
