With the permission of his parents he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Perth on 21 August 1915 [30: item 7369824]
He had previously served for three years and four months with the 85A militia in Albany [30]
Upon enlistment he was 5 feet 3½ inches tall, weighed 125 pounds and had grey eyes, fair hair and a fresh complexion [30]
After training at Blackboy Hill in the Perth hills he was initially appointed to the 9th Reinforcements of the 28th Battalion [30]
Embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A28 Miltiades on 12 February 1916 [18]
Private 3752 in the Australian Imperial Force's 51st Battalion in France during the First World War [30]
He suffered a severe gunshot wound his arm and left side in August 1916 and was evacuated to England for medical treatment [30]

He embarked from England on the H.T. Commonwealth and disembarked in Western Australia on 4 June 1919 [30]
